The benefits of reducing the unwanted levels of Passive Intermodulation (PIM) within base station transmission line systems have long been understood. With the development of new technologies and modulation techniques such as LTE and the increasing use of multi-band systems the negative effects of PIM within mobile wireless networks is now even more prevalent.
A leading cause of PIM is that of poorly designed or manufactured transmission line components such as antennas, combiners, TMA’s, surge arrestors and perhaps most importantly RF coaxial jumper cables. Whilst many, but not all, manufacturers of jumper cables are aware of the need to reduce PIM generation there is no common level of what is or is not an acceptable PIM level within this industry.
A comparison of six leading jumper brands shows that there can be as much as 10 to 15db difference in advertised minimum PIM levels. Furthermore there is prevalence for some manufacturers to use terms such as ‘typical PIM levels’ which might lead to the conclusion that not ‘every’ assembly is actually individually PIM tested at the point of manufacture.

Although jumpers comply eith IP68, at times it might be required to add additional protection due to extreme weather conditions. The Rosenberger Jumper Boot - RJB - is an ideal alternative to tape.
